My last line: Is it safe to erase an SSD? The answer is NO. There are many free options like DBAN and ERASER. Lots of scratches can do the job too. However, if I sell or donate a computer the easier and reliable way to erase the disk is using Gordon Hughes' free HDDErase program available at UCSandiego's Center for Memory and Recording Research. Some times I open the HD case dismount the disk and break it to pieces. Any time I need to put a defective disk in the garbage bin I simply use a degausser to render the HD completely unusable. Nevertheless, I never simply throw away any HD, SSD or Flash even if defective. Actually, I do not need to erase a disk cause I never store any sensible information in my computers. I agree with MikeR comment, but wish to add my two cents.I erased a HDD once in my life just to know the effects. You could do it, if you really need to, but don't risk to destroy and expensive SSD just to see what happens. Is it safe to erase an SSD? The answer is NO.
